Providing Better Information on Medication Safety in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding 

Pregnancy studies, also known as pregnancy exposure registries, gather valuable information about how medications, vaccines, and health conditions might affect a pregnancy. These studies are observational, which means participants are not asked to take medications or make changes to their medical treatments or healthcare choices. Some participants may be taking medications or received vaccines, while others have not. Similarly, some participants may have health conditions, while others may not. The studies follow participants through their pregnancy—and sometimes follow the infants after birth, collecting information along the way. The information helps researchers learn if the medications, vaccines, or health conditions might affect pregnancy outcomes, such as increasing or lowering the chances of birth defects, preterm delivery, or other complications. 

Breastfeeding studies help provide more information about how medications, vaccines, or other exposures could affect breast milk or the growth and development of breastfed children. These studies enroll people who are breastfeeding or pumping while taking certain medications or vaccines, as well as those who are not taking medications or vaccines. Participants are not asked to make any changes to their medical treatments or healthcare choices. Participants provide milk samples and information about their child’s health to researchers as the child grows. Researchers can use this information to learn whether the medications or vaccines can get into the milk, change the milk, or have an effect on a child’s growth and development.
